Maui Space Surveillance Complex – Time Lapse

Haleakalā (“house of the sun”) is a prominent feature of the Hawaiian island of Maui.  In Hawaiian folklore, Haleakalā’s crater was home to the grandmother of the demigod Māui. Legend has it that with his grandmother’s help, Māui’s captured the sun and slowed its journey so they day would be lengthened.

Today Haleakalā is the home of the Maui Space Surveillance Complex, part of the Air Force Space Command, which consists of many telescopes to track objects in Earth orbit.  The Maui shortened night is considered one of the best places on Earth to view space.

Over a 3-day period an team from Airman magazine, a U.S. Air Force official publication captured this stunning time lapse sequence.
