Birds in Flight and Aerial Photographers

Common Cranes Fly Over Venice

This awesome BBC Earthflight video is less that two minutes long, but is sure to pique your curiosity on how the video was shot. Every time I watch the video I see something new and interesting; last time it was the lead bird’s eye movements.

This ‘behind the scenes’ BBC clip for Barnacle Geese Fly Over London shows an ultralight being used to capture birds in flight. I wonder how many Navy aerial photographers would love that ride … actually, I can think of only one who might opt out.

As a side note, ultralights are used in the U.S. to help guide endangered Sandhill Cranes from Wisconsin to their winter-over habitat north of Tampa. This year the FAA temporarily halted the migration because the pilot was being paid.
